Sweater Weather Surprise
Every year when Christmas rolls around, I break out in a light sweat, “what am I going to get Hilary?” She’s one of the most thoughtful gift-givers I’ve ever met. She’s good at remembering things you’ve mentioned, what you like, what you don’t like, something that is missing from your home. One year she bought me a floral skirt and striped top from Mango that quickly became my favorite, she even picked out the correct sizes! Hilary just gets gift-giving. It’s one of her many gifts (pun intended).
This year I would be thoughtful as well, I would give a gift that was as thoughtful as what Hilary would inevitably give me. It actually turned out to be relatively easy. Despite living a continent and an ocean apart, Hilary and I talk regularly. We text daily and skype every other week, so I made sure to pay attention to what she was saying in case she dropped any hints, which she did. It turns out that she dresses her daughter, Luisa, in her own style, because she send me links to various sweaters and shoes she’d purchased for her and would say, “If only I could find this in my size!” Challenge accepted.
I found Hilary some sweaters to match her daughter’s wardrobe. Luisa wears a lot of navy (she looks great in it!), so I bought Hilary a navy ruffle pull over from J. Crew factory (Hilary looks great navy too!). I also bought Hilary a fair isle sweater to match one of Luisa’s sweaters. I was delighted when Hilary wore the sweater multiple times during our week together. My gifts were a success!
Hilary, of course, nailed it again. This year she bought me brushed jersey mock neck top from Banana Republic that I’d been coveting for awhile. It reminded me of Audrey Hepburn’s turtleneck sweater in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I wore it multiple times over the following few days, pairing it with my Kut from the Kloth denim and Franco Sarto booties.
We had fun during the time we were both home, and we looked good too, thanks to our impeccable gift-giving abilities!
