Little House on the Lake
In an effort to embrace the fall season, I did a little shopping at my new favorite store: Uniqlo. If you know me, you’ve heard me mention the Japanese brand. I discovered it back in 2015 when I was living in Sydney, Australia. It sells modern basics at great prices. There aren’t many stores in the U.S., but it is available line which is great news for my wardrobe but bad news for my bank account. Right now it has a lot of cute pieces in autumnal hues. Among my picks was this orange floral dress.
I bought this dress about a month ago, but the sizing was way off, so I had to exchange it for a smaller size. By the time it arrived on Tuesday, I’d planned the entire outfit in my head: dress, denim jacket, grey suede shoes, and my trustee bangles. This outfit was so set in my head that there was no room for creativity when it came to dressing between the time I ordered it and the time it arrived. It was all I could think about. On October 9, 2019, it snowed. I was neither mentally nor sartorially prepared for it. I could have pulled out slacks and sweater, but dammit, I’d purchased a dress from Uniqlo. It arrived the day before, and nothing, not even snow was going to stop me from wearing it.

When I looked out the window this morning and saw the snow, I hesitated, but my heart said “fuck it,” so I wore the dress. The small was generous, and I wasn’t particularly thrilled when a stiff breeze blew up my legs and chilled me to my navel (one of the few downsides to wearing a dress), but it made me happy to think about how much I could eat and not feel the waistband.
As I walked the halls of my office in this floral dress, denim jacket, and boots, I felt rather Laura Ingalls-Wilder. I could take on anything from grumpy clients to homestead living in this dress. A couple of my coworkers complimented my dress, and I happily replied, “Thanks, it’s my Little House on the Prairie dress!” The snow has now melted but it’s still unseasonably cold, but I will wear this dress until there is substantial snow on the ground
