Munich Shopping
Last week I returned from a surprise trip to Munich to visit Hilary where I was reminded how much fashion has globalized (think Zara, H&M, and TJ Maxx/TK Maxx). While I love those stores, and they aren’t readily accessible in Northern Idaho, when I travel I prefer to find something local that I cannot find anywhere in the U.S. Thanks to Hilary’s location in a non-touristy area and my preference to walk everywhere, I did find three stores that provided a unique shopping experience.
Ludwig Beck
Ludwig Beck is located in Marienplatz so you can pop in after you see the glockenspiel.
Ludwig Beck is by far the prettiest and most luxurious store in Munich, it’s the Bavarian equivalent of Nordstrom and every department boasts lovely displays. While it’s too expensive for my price point, it’s fun to walk through it and browse brands like Armani, Boss, Comme des Garcons, Current/Elliott, and Missoni. My favorite department is its paper department, which is something I’d never heard of before I visited Ludwig Beck. It has shelves upon shelves of wrapping paper and stationary; I could stay there for hours.
A sea of dreamy prints
Hall Huber
Hall Huber’s style and price point is similar to Ann Taylor/Loft; it features contemporary, work appropriate fashion at affordable prices. I fell in love with this store during my 2012 visit and stocked up on accessories and dresses. During this visit, their displays were full of dreamy maxi dresses and block heeled sandals; however, due to the cold weather, I bought a heavy scarf from Zara and skipped the dress and sandals.
Tchibo
Just down the street from Hilary's apartment
Tchibo may well be my all time favorite store. It started off as a chain coffee shop but incorporated every day products from clothes to housewares into its locations. The theme of products for sale change every couple of weeks, so you never know what you will find when you visit, but you can always count on coffee (can you imagine anything better than sipping a latte and browsing clothes?). Tchibo was selling clothes during this visit, so I scored a couple of cute, affordable tops and a new pair of leggings.
Clothes and coffee...drool.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit Munich several times over the past few years and enjoy shopping at these stores each time. If you find yourself in Munich and want to shop, these stores won’t disappoint.
