Investment Denim

Here at Micro-Closet Hilary and I are low on space, so when we add to our wardrobe we make thoughtful choices and investments to get the most out of our pieces.  In an earlier post I wrote about Micro-Closet's essentials, one of which was denim, and I recently decided to invest in some new denim. By "invest" I mean not only do I devote money but also time and thought to ensure I get the best pair of denim I can.

The first pair of investment denim I purchased was a pair of 7 For All Mankind in 2008.  If you had a pair of designer denim in 2008, it was 7 For All Mankind.  Their signature red tag on the back right pocket was a sure sign of quality fashion.  I was so proud of that pair of low rise, ill-fitting, boot-cut jeans.  They were soft and durable, Hilary helped me hem them, and I wore them every day for the next year, but I also spent that year pulling them up over my crack.  With my long torso low rise is not for me.  Those 7s taught me a good lesson: quality denim can be worth the investment, but everyone should take the time to find a brand that suits them.

Since then I've learned I need a mid to high rise cut and prefer soft, stretchy denim.  With that in mind I did my research and decided to try Frame.  I'd seen that brand on a variety of different online stores including Nordstrom.  It had high reviews, and I had a gift card, so I gave it a go. The Frame "Le High Straight" denim I chose were worth every penny.  They are soft, durable, flattering, and high rise!

I feel like a million bucks in Frame "Le High Straight" denim, Chinese Laundry boots, and an Ann Taylor button-up.  Don't be surprised if you've already seen me in this outfit or see me in later, it's my new uniform!

When I pulled them out of the box they looked rather narrow, but they are bi-stretch and fit well.  Usually when I buy an investment pair of jeans, I stick with classic, no nonsense skinny or straight leg denim but I'm quite keen on staggered and raw hem denim right now.  The distressed hem detail on these jeans does not detract from their versatility.  They can be dressed up or down for just about any occasion.  Last weekend I paired them with a white button up and grey suede boots and I've worn nothing else since.

I love the raw, staggered hem on these jeans.

If you're considering investing in a pair of denim, I recommend trying Frame denim, but keep an open mind to all denim brands. Find a department store or online store (with free shipping and returns, like Nordstrom) that offers a variety of brands, select a number of different cuts, and try them on.  It's the only way to learn what suits you and to ensure you make a good investment.
