The Winter Jacket — Micro-Closet

The recent spring-like weather in Munich had us all hoping that winter was behind us. Alas, there is snow on the forecast, which means we are indeed weeks away from warmer weather. Since many of us are still living in cold conditions at the moment, this brings us to Micro-Closet’s thoughts on an essential: the winter coat.

While winter jackets might seem like a no brainer to own a winter coat (unless you are one of those lucky individuals living in a warmer climate), Micro-Closet has tips to offer on when to buy and which styles can are flattering.

There is in fact a right time to buy a winter coat, and we are in one of those seasons right now. As many savvy shoppers know, they can find winter clothing on sale after the holidays. By February selections might be limited, but one can still find deep discounts. Websites such as Hautelook, Nordstrom Rack, and J. Crew Factory have provided a few of Micro-Closet’s own coat purchases, including the one I'm wearing in the photo below.

When you shop for a winter coat, remember that not all coats are created equally. You'll want to consider style, material, and versatility. Claire and I personally own multiple styles to best fit our various winter needs. First, there is what I dub the “Michelin Man Special," which is a down coat of varying lengths that’s sole purpose is for warmth from the winter elements. The style and cut of these types of coat is limited due to the puffiness of the down, but it will keep you warm in arctic temperatures. We balance such a coat by owning another style appropriate for milder temperatures and formal events. This would be a wool jacket which is narrower around the waist to provide a flattering cut. Styles range from the classic pea coat to the recently trendy winter wrap. Is it necessary to own two different styles? No, but for those who live in climates with longer winters, having two options is worth the investment.
